Product Description

  • This is the fourth vintage of the Boulder Bank series of wines. Twenty-five year veteran winemaker, Nick Goldschmidt, has created this product to showcase two of New Zealand’s preeminent varietals – Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. Having made wine worldwide for many years, Nick has returned to his New Zealand roots to create Boulder Bank. This Pinot Noir comes from the WaxEye Vineyard on Hawkesbury Road in the Omaka area. Planted in 1999, these new Dijon clones are cane-pruned to reduce yield and have separate shoots for maximum cluster exposure. With an east-facing aspect of undulating glacial soils, the WaxEye Vineyard receives increased air flow and cooling. Humidity is also kept to a minimum. Deep black cherry color, with dusty plum and autumn forest on the nose. Flavors of red berry jam and cherry. Yields were lower in 2009 versus 2008, and the wines show more jammy fruit than usual.
  • Our VineyardsOur goal is to highlight the special characters of this noble varietal while showcasing the distinct benefits and attributes associated with these two magnificent vineyard sites. Yoeman Vineyard, Alexander Valley Goldschmidt Yoeman Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon comes from a remarkable site situated on a northeastern slope in the renowned Alexander Valley. The vineyard is situated on a terraced knoll, just east of the town of Geyserville and is comprised primarily of a gravelly loam soil. The slope direction provides excellent exposure of the grape clusters and allows for long “hang time.” This provides us with perfectly formed bunches of grapes that possess optimal ripeness and fully developed varietal character. The unique combination of exposure, soil conditions, drainage, and mature vines produces wines of rich, concentrated flavors that showcase the true character of the region, the vineyard, and the varietal. The Goldschmidt Vineyard Yoeman Cabernet is a full bodied wine with supple tannins, luxurious texture, and a lengthy finish. Goldschmidt Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is hand crafted, utilizing the best possible resources available. The wine is exceptional and exhibits the richness and balance that are the hallmarks of world class wines. Game Ranch Vineyard, Napa Valley, Oakville The prestigious Game Ranch Vineyard is situated in the famed Oakville appellation in the heart of the Napa Valley. Located on an old river bottom on the eastern bench of the Silverado Trail, the vineyard is made up of very rocky, well draining soils. In this stressful, low moisture environment, the vines struggle to put everything they can into the development of the fruit. With perfect control over the watering of this vineyard site we are able to coax the vines to produce grapes of great concentration and exceptional quality. The Goldschmidt Vineyard Oakville Cabernet is a full bodied wine with gripping tannins that are balanced with great structure, power, and weight. Goldschmidt Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is hand crafted, utilizing the best possible resources available. The wine is exceptional; with the richness and balance that are the hallmarks of world class wines.

New Zealand Although it makes just one-tenth the wine of neighboring Australia, this country’s production is increasing every year. Its white wines are generally unoaked with pronounced flavor, rich texture, and high acidity. The South Island’s renowned Sauvignon Blanc is so distinctive that it can be compared to asparagus, limes, grass, or passion fruit. This region also excels in intense Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs. Cabernet Sauvignon grows well on the North Island, yielding an intense, berry fruit. There the Pinot Noirs are rich and the Chardonnays are soft and ripe but well balanced.
Pinot Noir (pee noh nwahr)—A tricky grape to grow, Pinot Noir makes some of the best wines in the world. The prototype wine is red Burgundy from France but Oregon, California, New Zealand, and parts of Australia also produce good Pinot Noir. The wine is lighter in color than Cabernet or Merlot with relatively high alcohol, medium-to-high acidity, and medium-to-low tannin. Its flavors and aromas can be very fruity or earthy and woodsy, depending on how it is grown. It is rarely blended with other grapes.
Australia/New Zealand Besides producing Mel Gibson, this region can also produce some pretty intense wine. Australia has become the fourth largest wine export in the world. Australian labels are strictly labeled depending where the grapes where grown to make the wine. In New Zealand the sea moderates the weather producing cooler summers and milder winters. The effect of consistently cool nights is to produce fruit which is nearly always high in acidity.
Marlborough When the first growers planted grapes in Marlborough in the 1970s (there is evidence of plantings as early as 1870s), it is unlikely they would have foreseen the extent of the growth and fame that the region’s wine industry would achieve, based upon a single varietal called Sauvignon Blanc. The distinctive pungency and zest fruit flavours of the first Marlborough wines, in particular Sauvignon Blanc, captured the imagination of the country's winemakers as well as international wine commentators and consumers and sparked an unparalleled boom in vineyard development. Worldwide interest in Marlborough wines, particularly Sauvignon Blanc, has continued to fuel that regional wine boom.
